Decorating With Unique Quilt Hangers

By Eliza Mendoza

Quilt hangers are a wonderful method of storing your handmade, quilted coverlets as well as displaying them as works of art and detailed craftsmanship. Your friends and family will be able to enjoy them and they will not wear out due to usage or exposure.

When searching for the perfect hanger, you will find that most are wood products. Look for cutouts and designs in them that will match your home decor. Choose the one that will fit the coverlet you own - they are available in many different sizes including king, queen, twin and full. Miniature models are also available for smaller items such as baby comforters. You can also have them custom made to fit your particular project - be sure to measure carefully before ordering.

Most use compression and have knobs across the length to hold the edges of the coverlet down and secure it between front and back wooden boards. Others are a rod style where the coverlet is folded and draped over the rod. A pocket can also be sewn at the top edge of the quilt so the rod can run through it and it can be hung so the entire design can be viewed.

Some come with extra details such as a narrow shelf above the rod or compression bar. This is an excellent place to display other crafts, mementos or family pictures. Some models have a rod that swings out, making for easy addition or removal of different designs as your taste or seasons change.

Choose a location to mount your display that is not in the sun. You do not wish for your coverlet to fade. Some excellent areas to hang your piece of art includes over or in a stairwell, over a sofa, or hanging from a high ceiling. Use it as a headboard above the pillows on your bed for instant interest and appeal or on a large, blank wall to serve as a distinct focal point.

Hanging your item in a manner such as this will also keep your belongings safe from pets and small children. It is important to place it high enough that they don't pull it down or stain it. Kitchen areas and other sections of the home where food and other substances can be spattered on it are not advisable.

They can also be used for other decorating needs. Other items which can be displayed include Indian rugs, Asian coverlets, banners, large pieces of fabric artwork, Persian rugs, weaving, and tapestries. Your hanger can even be painted or stained to match the item being displayed.

If you love your displays, remember, they also make great gifts for other craftsmen. They can use these models to hang their own artwork for all of their relatives and guests to enjoy. Measure the artwork to be hung before ordering to make sure you get the correct size.

Quilt hangers allow you to enjoy the fruits of your hard work or effectively display an heirloom that has been handed down in your family. They do not require holes to be punched in the edges or damage of any kind. Using these to display your works of art will give you a deep sense of pride and a creatively decorated wall or area for years to come.
