Selecting The Right Valves Types To Avoid Valve Modification Services

By John Nelson

Valves are supposed to control the current of liquid in pipes. Once the valves are carelessly chosen then installed, they are prone to damage with time. Choosing the right types of valves for your pumping and piping systems is essential to avoid hiring costly Valve Modification services in Houston TX. Below are some examples of common valves types to be of help.

The first type is the ball valves that are fitted in pipes. The position of the hollow ball-shaped disks that form the valves determines the flow of the fluid. Once the valves are aligned towards the side in which the fluid flows, then they are opened. If they are in a perpendicular position to the fluid flow, then they are closed, and the fluid does not flow.

The next type is the plug ones. They are also known as clock valves. They work on the mechanisms that the bored passage should be in line with the inlet and outlets to allow the fluid to flow. If the outlets and inlets are not aligned with the passage but instead the solid part, then the flow is inhibited. The plug is used to start, block or throttle the flow of the fluid.

Butterfly valves are also available. They are very common due to their light weight, high level of adaptability and quick to use properties. They work on a similar principle with the ball and plug types. However, they differ in that rather than use a cylindrical shape or ball-shaped part to affect flow, a thin disk-shaped part is used to control the flow of the liquid.

When choosing the valves to use, the effect needed is used in the selection. For example, for constant flowing liquids, the sluice valves also known as gate valves are used. Such valves only allow one to either open or close it. Limiting the flowing liquid is not allowed thus it is best for constant flowing liquids. There are wedges fixed above the seats to help the liquid flow.

Another type of widely used option is the globe valves due to their low leakage. These valves result in a few leakages. They work using the linear motion mechanism similar to the gate valves. However, they differ with the gate valves as they allow increase or decrease of the current as well as use disks instead of wedges.

Other valve types work using the pinching mechanism. Such valves usually have a membrane made using a synthetic material that is pinched using a bar or gate to close the membrane and inhibit flow when closed. Common types of such valves are the pinch and diaphragm valves. Diaphragm types, however, are more preferred as they make a tighter seal.

Many people will prefer to change their valves depending on the purposes they want the valves to perform. Furthermore, the valves have varied features, advantages, and disadvantages that are very valuable when comparing the types so as to come up with one that best offers the services that you need. The viscosity of the fluid can also be used when selecting the type of valves.
