Understanding Atomic Force Microscopy Applications

By Scott Ward

It is important to understand the scale that these types of powerful tools are meant to be used for. Since the nanometer is a mere billionth of a meter, it is hard to imagine things getting even smaller than that, let alone being able to see them. This is the scale that AFM deals with, and there are numerous atomic force microscopy applications that help deal with these very small but important problems.

When conducting surface studies, it is often extremely important not to damage or completely destroy the samples that you are looking at. With some less precise tools, it is quite easy to make a slightly poor adjustment and have all of the samples you were scrutinizing be completely compromised. The amazing thing about these tools is that they are able to work with such delicate movements that entire surfaces are able to be observed and manipulated without actually sustaining damage.

There are three main types of properties that these tools are used to observe and analyze data from. Mechanical properties are generally those that involve moving parts and how those parts interact with each other. Beyond that, there are functional and electrical properties that can tell researchers a lot about what is working properly and what is not.

Getting young people to be interested in science is more important now than ever. If the next generation is taught early how interesting and exciting scientific studies can be, it can get them inspired to study it for their whole life long. Oftentimes, the key to awakening this interest is by letting them see and operate tools like these.

It is incredibly helpful to have an expert looking over your shoulder when you are using a device like this for the first time. It is not always easy to just look at the manual and instantly be able to figure out every step of the process. Whenever possible, having the firsthand advice of someone with experience can help you out a lot.

It is helpful to know about the different modes that are used with these tools, as well as what each one of them is used for. There are some situations where multiple modes might be able to get the job done, and it is up to the user to decide which one works best for him or her. Other times, only one specific mode will work in order to get the kind of information you want out of the procedure.

The AFM is quite popular among the scientific and research community, and its widespread usage does not seem likely to die down anytime soon. A big reason why so many people love it is that it has an accuracy level that cannot be beat. When you really need to get the right information on the first try, you need something like AFM.

This is something that is used frequently by research and development teams for big companies. There is essentially no industry out there that has not heard of this type of equipment. The use of tools like these is essential for jobs like quality control, where it is ensured that everything is up to all the highest standards before it is put to use or sold to customers.
