Why Railroad Brush Cutting Is Top-Rated

By Jerri Perry

It is very undesirable to have uncontrollable forms of vegetation wildly sprouting helter skelter especially when it poses a threat to key human rights as the right of way or easements. The rail industry in particular has been greatly affected by this overgrown foliage phenomenon especially since it poses insecurity to users of the rail, for instance it blocks engineers from clearly seeing what lies ahead. Various steps in railroad brush cutting are therefore being taken to help salvage this dire situation and for a very long time now.

Among the techniques that have been employed in efforts to eradicate this problem are spraying weeds and cutting along the track, cutting and maintaining the brush off-track, and also managing vegetation at grade crossing. As will be seen, it would be pointless to use any method whatsoever, without practicing it.

Short term solutions are a no-no and a common feature especially of the spraying weeds method. Because of use of the same chemicals some notorious weeds have become resistant to herbicides, for instance, the mares tail weed and the Russian thistle. It is very difficult and almost impossible to solve this problem of resistance because there is not a wide variety of an herbicide brand to choose from. To make it worse, the herbicide industry is mainly focused on agricultural weeds as opposed to railroad weeds which may be much tougher and more versatile than their counterparts.

To add salt to injury, herbicides are not always accepted in some states due to their adverse effects on the environment especially at this era of global sensitization on environmental pollution. But all hope is not lost for such states since alternative and much safer methods are still available.

Railroad cutting is a very effective and efficient method because some on-track cutters can cut on both sides of the rail. This is very effective in time saving since double the work is done in one trip as compared to the tedious and time-consuming process of spraying herbicides from section to section, for example.

The railroad brush cutting machine is one of the easiest to control anyone could ever find. Learning to use it is very easy and in fact a diligent person can be able to man it like a pro within hours. It therefore does not require any special attention or any highly specialized art to be able to use.

Furthermore, unlike other methods this is a very cost-effective method besides being time-saving. The machine does not require a locomotive to function, a fact which besides making it easy to man also alleviates extra locomotive costs. It also uses almost no fuel to propel and therefore rids this method of extra costs emanating from excess fuel requirements.

In conclusion, of all the methods currently in use to control railroad vegetation, railroad brush cutting is simply the best.
