The Uses Of Urinalysis Reagent Test Strips

By Essie Osborn

A urine test strip is used to diagnose changes in the urine of an individual. A standard strip is usually made of a number of chemical reagents that change color when immersed in a urine sample. Urinalysis reagent test strips are a simple, easy to use and affordable means of initial screening for any health problems.

All health professionals use these tests during routine examinations. Another usage is for patients with chronic illnesses. These patients can even self-monitor at home and report any significant changes to their healthcare professional. Some individuals interested in preventative medicine are now using these products as a way of monitoring their general health.

Sometimes the problems detected are simple ones that are easy to treat, such as urinary tract infections. Other markers may indicate a more serious problem. Various diseases such as those of the liver and kidney can be picked up in this way. If the initial indicators are serious, they need to be followed up with other tests before a diagnosis is made.

The product is sold in vials and the number of strips in a vial vary. Products also test for different things. Some only indicate nitrites and leucocytes which show up when bacteria or pus is present due to infection. Some indicate only Ph level. There are many products that can test many levels such as those of proteins, ketones, glucose, haemoglobin, acetone, bilirubin and others at the same time.

These products are often a low cost, effective way of detecting potential health problems that can be addressed. When bacteria is present in urine, this shows the presence of nitrites. In pregnancy, if glucose or protein shows up, this can be an indicator of high blood sugar or high blood pressure. Ketones often show up in the urine of dieters, particularly those on low carbohydrate diets.

The best urine sample is taken first thing in the morning. It should be collected in a clean container, preferably a glass one. When the strip is taken out of the vial, make sure to close the cap securely again to minimize exposure to light and air. When removing the strip, running it against the rim of the container can help to remove excess urine. Too much urine can affect the result by causing reagents to leak into one another.

It does not take long before results are seen, sometimes only a minute or two. Other products may require up to 30 minutes. A color chart is included with the product and the results are measured by comparing those on the strip with those indicated on the chart. It shows which colors indicate normal and which deviate from the norm. A range of concentrations shows how much the color differs from the norm.

It must be born in mind these a strip is used simply as a first step in evaluating health. If the problems detected are not serious, they can usually be easily treated. However, more serious problems should be discussed with a health care professional. Further tests at a laboratory may be suggested if considered necessary.
