The Effects Of Sexism In Sports

By Etta Bowen

There are many areas in which females have been looked down upon. Each and every day women are fighting to be given equal treatment as compared to male. This stretches all the way from allocation of jobs, in the education sector and a recent one is in the sports sector. This has however not been given much attention and majority of the people are not aware of sexism in sports as a rising issue.

To start with, unfair treatment has been observed in a way that women and men are covered by the sports media. Male sport representative get more airplay compared to sportswomen. Men get more attention and make more headlines each and every time making them appear to be more prominent players.

A huge issue also comes out in the types of games kits chosen to be won by the female participants. They are usually short and revealing which has made some of the ladies complain a lot saying that this diminishes their values and standards. Complaints arise in the event that males are not given such huge restrictions. This brings about a ridge between male and female athletes.

Ladies who take part in sports have at most times raised issues about being mishandled sexually. This may be either through direct abuse using sexual terms or physical assault like rape. Many wonder who is responsible for this kind of act and the answer lies just before their eyes. Their coaches, instructors and fellow teammates give them these tough times.

In some instances, women are judged according to their looks. There are some games in which only the good-looking females qualify and this is highly discriminative as no much emphasis is put on their skill at times. This is not the same for the male counterparts as looks are never put as a consideration which has brought a huge drift between the male and the females.

The football game has for so many years over the past been considered to be a male category. When the same game was introduced for the lady participants, it was not taken seriously due to the fact that women were not used to playing this game. When women are chosen to take up the posts of referees and coaches, their decisions are at most times looked down upon and doubted.

In closed games like golfing, masculine domination has occurred for the longest time possible. Women are at most times not allowed to participate. It goes to a worse extent where some clubs are indicated to be strictly for men, meaning that it is Law that application of ladies to join those teams is not welcome which is evidently the highest form of discrimination.

In conclusion, just as there is a strong fight being put up on a daily basis to create equality in both sexes in many aspects of the society, similar effort should be seen in the sports area. This is for the main purpose of achieving the main goal of the day which is to create healthy development in the sports sector. Equality should be highly advocated.
