A Concise Description Of The Sponge Blasting Method

By Misty Tyler

When you have a surface that needs to have dirt, paint, oil and grease or other coatings removed, you want a process that is effective, without costing a small fortune. Better yet, the product should not harm the environment. Ohio customers can make use of the sponge blasting method to clean and prep surfaces of all types. The cleaning product is a polyurethane which is impregnated with abrasive materials. The product is sprayed on the surface which needs attention. The cellular structure of the poly flattens out as it strikes the surface which exposes the abrasive material. The polyurethane then constricts so that it lifts the coating or contaminants from the surface. The poly media can be reused, so it is economical.

Paint removal, even multiple layers of paint can be easily removed without damage to the surface below. The same process is used to clean other unwanted layers or dirt from the surface. Only the type of sponge which is used on the surface varies. The dust from the process never becomes airborne, so there are no health risks in using the product.

The benefit of using this method of paint removal is that it doesn't affect the integrity of the surface. Even sensitive surfaces are not harmed, because there is different types of media, including some with no abrasives or very mild abrasive. The cleanup is very easy, since minimal dust is released into the air to spread over surrounding areas. There is no water utilized in the removal process either, allowing for indoor use. It's gentle enough to use on historic homes.

Steel grit abrasive is the most powerful type, intended to remove the toughest coatings. It is used on surfaces which have become deteriorated (rusty). It can also be used to remove extremely thick coatings or elastomeric coatings. Examples of usage include industrial coating removal and removing petrochemical storage tank or rail car linings.

Also very effective for industrial type coatings is the sponge media which contains aluminum oxide as an abrasive. It cleans surfaces in the offshore drilling, marine manufacturing, military and petrochemical industries. It can also be used to take care of pulp and paper industry equipment. The underlying surface is unaffected.

There are sponge products which contain an abrasive content which is made of plastic chips. It you are trying to clean graffiti from tile or fiberglass, this type of product is the best. It is effective in cleaning the surface without causing damage during the process.

If the underlying material is valuable and has a layer of oil and grease, only a mild abrasive is required. Light abrasion is needed to remove smoke and soot from hard surfaces such as concrete or brick. A light abrasive action can also be effective when working around hoses and fittings, or when there are nooks and crannies which are difficult to reach by hand.

The sponge blasting product doesn't cause dangerous debris to billow up into the air. Since it can be re-used, it is economical. Its effectiveness is widely recognized. No water is used during the process so it is easy to clean up afterward.
