The Application Of Nitrogen Generators

By Kristen Baird

Nitrogen is an abundant chemical component of the atmosphere. It occupies the largest percentage of it and is normally represented by the capital letter N. It has properties that makes it very useful in the industries. Chemical inertness is the property that proves to be the most essential. Nitrogen generators are used to produce N2 gas that can be used for other purposes.

The generators are known to operate in two different technologies. One in the adsorbent technology. An adsorbent is the solid substance that is used in this kind of generator. The most common type of this technology is the pressure swing absorbent. The price of operating the adsorbent technology is low and this lowers the price of the nitrogen that is produced by it.

Membrane technology is the other type. In it exists two concepts used for the generation. Membrane cartridge and the gas separation concept. The latter takes advantage of the different speeds that a gas uses while it penetrates a membrane-like substance. Two gases cannot have same velocity. This eases the separation.

Membrane cartridge technology separates the nitrogen from other gases in a hollow tube like machine. Compressed air enters through one end. Other elements like water vapor, oxygen and carbon dioxide are absorbed by substances at the side of the tube. This brings about separation. At the other end of the tube, nitrogen is obtained.

The generators are applied in many fields. The food industry suffers a lot from the decay of food substances and food rotting. A large supply of nitrogen gas is needed to prevent oxidation that causes food to rot. In so doing, the lifetime of these products is stretched out. The presence of these gas prevents the continued existence of bacteria that fasten the decaying process. It is very vital in preservation of food.

In aircraft and motor vehicle industry, the generator is used in place of a compressed air tank. Air from the atmosphere contains water vapor as one of its constituents. When the air is compressed it still contains the water. To avoid the presence of water in the vehicle or the aircraft tires, the generator is used. This is because N2 is dry.

In the petroleum industry it is used for more than one purposes. It is incorporated while transporting hydrocarbons or the various petroleum products. It is then used to examine the efficiency of the pipelines. Most importantly, it is used to safeguard the environment. It prevents outbreaks of fire because of its inertness and does not support combustion.

In the paints and the pharmaceutical industry it is used for safety measures too. The latter is prone to explosions due to the existence of highly flammable chemical elements. It is necessary to take safety measures because of that. In the paint industry, safety is also required as there is handling of hydrocarbons. The gas also prevents polymerization of drying oils by displacing oxygen.

The applications of these generators cannot be exhausted. They are as many as our industries. The properties of the gas have proven to be very useful to most, if not all the industries and to the lives of each and every person.
