A Guide On Proper Electronic Equipment Storage

By Robert King

Most electric devices are not designed to go unused for long periods of time. In order to ensure that your devices stay in good condition when you store them, you have to keep them just right. It is essential that you prepare your devices properly, so that they can withstand being stored. Here are some tips that you should keep in mind when you are considering electronic equipment storage.

Before you store the devices, it is important that you first wipe them down. Do not store the devices when they are still dirty. This is because the dust and dirt can cause build up, if left for long, and this can affect the way your devices work. Therefore, wipe off the external surface with a dry piece of cloth. If possible, wipe off the internal parts with a quick dry solvent or blow it up using compressed air.

Avoid keeping the devices together with their batteries. If the batteries can be removed, remove the batteries and keep them in a different place. Stored batteries can leak acid, which can end up eroding and damaging the insides of your devices. However, in cases where the device comes with built in batteries, then it will not be necessary to remove them. For instance, when it comes to cameras and computers.

If you have the original packaging that the gear came in, make sure to use it. These packaging have been specifically designed to protect the devices, making them the ideal material for storing the gear. Avoid using plastic bags, as this can cause moisture build up, which will affect the apparatus.

Any cables that come with the device should be disconnected from it before it is stored. Tie up the cables well in a loop, so that they will be easy to untangle. If possible, label all the cables and wires.

A helpful thing to do would be to take pictures of your device before you deconstruct them. This is especially if you know you will have a hard time putting the pieces together again. Taking a look at the photos will help.

TVs and computers should be stored in climate controlled areas. Store them off the floor and towards the back of the room you are using. This is to minimize chances of people coming into contact with the device a lot and maybe even accidentally knocking them down. Screens should be stored in an upright position. Do not place anything on top of the devices.

You can also check the user manual to see if the manufacturer gave any instructions on how the devices should be stored. Alternatively, check the manufacturer's website. Remove any objects that might have been inserted into the devices. These include DVDs, CDs and in the case of printers remove ink cartridges. If these objects are left inside the apparatus for long periods of time, they might end up getting stuck and give you a hard time when you eventually want to remove them.
