Simple Facts About Geese Removal

By Jessica Stevens

Places with large populations of geese mean that the birds pose a major threat to both the environment and residents. Geese feed heavily on grass meaning that they may cause some serious damage to lawns in a place. Excessive feeding on lawns ruins the grass, thus interfering with its proper growth. This way, the birds can damage the otherwise beautiful scenery. Besides, their droppings dirty and make places smelly. Thus geese removal can be an emergency in some cases.

In most cases, these birds prefer areas with open water bodies. They frequently go to water to swim and drink, but return to dry land to feed. In case the water body has fish dwelling in it, these birds can significantly reduce their numbers. Essentially, they may cause extinction of fish in water bodies they frequent or inhabit. A goose can be a major flight hazard in places frequented with aircraft, vehicles, and boats.

A goose may cause the engine of an aircraft to fail to function when the bird is sucked in. This may bring down the aircraft. With these drawbacks, it is always good that the control of their presence and movement be done using appropriate methods. Different mechanisms for managing this issue have been created. Others are humane while others are never humane.

To avoid getting in trouble with the law it is highly recommended to use humane techniques. In most jurisdictions, the concerned arms of local governments have put in place laws which aim at protecting geese from activities that are inhumane. As such, certain techniques of elimination are prohibited while others are allowed. Besides it is compulsory that civilians obtain permits prior to engaging in any geese control activities.

Understanding the existing laws in a particular region before being involved in control practices is essential. Erecting fences is among the most effective means of removing the birds. When a water body frequented by birds is fenced all around it, the birds are denied easy access to the region. This is a perfect way to limit their access to the place because they go away eventually.

Usually, a goose prefers loafing, roosting, and feeding near a water body where they can escape easily if they feel threatened. A fence tends to deny them the ability to escape easily. Fencing also breaks their line of movement and sight of vision. Even if they manage to fly over the barrier, they will feel the fatigue of having to do that each and every time they need access to that area. Eventually, they go away to other easily accessible areas.

Also, effective against these birds is the use of frightening devices. Frightening can be achieved by the use of lasers, effigies, flagging, and pyrotechnics. The devices used are designed to scare the birds by producing sound or making movements which scares them away. Their effectiveness should be realized in a few days following installation.

Another effective method is the use of chemical repellents. Commonly used chemicals include anthraquinone and Methyl Anthranilate. While anthroquinone causes stomach upsets upon consumption, methyl anthranilate results into a pain sensation when inhaled by geese. Repeated incidents of stomach upsets makes them to start avoiding the poisoned source of food.
