Important Facts About Geese Removal

By Sharon Sanders

North America has a huge population of geese that are attractive and birds. Although they are attractive, they bring with them problems and harm to both property and people. In surroundings where they are found, the residents do complain of being disturbed by the birds. When threatened, they often attack people by trying to peck at them. The birds exhibit this behavior towards children, pets and even adults. This makes them a danger. Thus, geese removal is made a matter of urgency.

Grass is the most preferred food for the birds. They consume a lot of grass in the places they live. This brings about destruction to the landscape and lawns. The blades of grass and the roots are the parts of grass they feed on mostly. Once the grass has been exhausted, the birds try to get to the roots and grass tubers by digging the ground. The destruction caused is particularly enormous if the birds are many.

Being big birds, geese produce a lot of droppings in the place they occupy. The birds feed constantly during the day, and that makes them to defecate continuously throughout the day. The droppings usually have a foul smell that can make a place inhabitable. However, the droppings are a good source of organic manure, which is good for lawns and landscape.

Geese have been a problem to many people and they continue to be. That has led to the invention of mechanisms of controlling their movement and presence in an area. One of the best strategies to use to control the birds is to make the area as inhospitable as possible. One of the ways of making a place inhospitable to the birds is by not feeding them.

The culture of giving food to wild birds and animals is prevalent among the citizens of Canada and the US. This behavior lures a lot of birds that come to feed on the abundant food. The birds will have to look for food in other places if the food supply in a place is cut. Doing so forces the birds to relocate although this takes some time for it to occur.

Setting up decoys in a place is one way of controlling the presence and movement of Canadian geese. The preferred decoys are those of swans. It is impossible for both swans and geese to inhabit a common place since they are both very aggressive birds when it comes to caring for their chicks. It is not essential to install decoys all year long.

Removal of decoys should be done when the birds relocate to other places. The use of decoys should be mixed with other strategies too. Nets for capturing the birds can be set up together with decoys. Captured birds are them transferred to other areas or they can be euthanized. Euthanizing the birds is prohibited in other areas.

In the event the law forbids euthanization of captured birds, transferring the birds to a park far away is an option. It is essential to know the rules enforced by the government of a certain place concerning geese control prior to doing it. This prevents brushing shoulders with the law.
